What is the secret to obtain a fertile ground without fertiliser?

I have tried different things and finally ended up using mainly straw.

The secret is to never ever leave your soil naked.

Today is the first day after winter to get back into the garden and start the new planting season - finally! I just can't wait... ready to implement a few new ideas - test and try!
